METHUEN — Mayor James P. Jajuga and Chief Joseph Solomon report that Methuen Police Department responded to a fatal motor vehicle crash Sunday afternoon.

At 5:58 p.m., Methuen Police, Fire and EMS responded to the area of 568 Merrimack St. for a report of a serious head-on collision.

Upon arrival, first responders provided aid to the drivers and passenger involved in the crash and officers initiated an on-scene investigation. The initial investigation indicates that a 2001 Toyota sedan was traveling eastbound on Merrimack Street at the same time that a 2004 Chevy Blazer was traveling westbound. The Toyota, officers believe, crossed the center line and crashed head-on into the Blazer.

The passenger in the Toyota, Devanah Walker, age 23, of Haverhill, was taken to a Boston hospital by medical helicopter, where she died of her injuries.

The driver of the Chevy, a 63-year-old Methuen man, and the driver of the Toyota, a 20-year-old Haverhill woman, were transported to Lawrence General Hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life threatening.

Methuen Police and the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section are jointly investigating the crash.
